Why I Prefer Wooden a Platform Bed Frame

The platform bed is a great way to guarantee a comfortable nights sleep and also to have a stylish room.

The main decision you have to make when choosing a platform bed frame is the material. There has been a recent rise in the popularity of the metal platform bed frames. This is due to some very attractive styles appearing on the market. These are often with curves; curves on the head board, and even low arches forming the legs. These are very attractive – but they are still not my first choice. Let me explain why.

I like my rooms to be clear and simple – I am not a clutter sort of a person. So, yes, I do love the style of the metal contemporary beds – but they simply are not practical enough for me.

I have a couple of platform beds in my apartment and they are both wooden frames. One is in the main bed room. This room is quite large, so I choose a bed with drawers underneath it. It has two drawers which pull out on each side. This is the perfect place to store all my bed linen. In fact, since I have drawers on both sides, I have bed linen on one side and all my towels on the other – perfect. These no longer takes up valuable space.

My second room is a guest room, and this is somewhat smaller. The size of the room meant that if I was going to have drawers under the bed, I would have to choose a smaller bed; I wasn’t too keen on this. So I looked a bit further and found a great design of bed. The whole platform which the mattress sits on lifts up. It is jointed at the head board and has an amazing mechanism which allows the mattress and frame to be lifted up to reveal a huge storage space. I have actually divided this space into two sections. One half is used for all the blankets and quilts and bulky items which you never know where to put in the summer. On the other side I have put those clever storage bags, where you can put your out of season clothes and then vacuum the bag to seal it.

So, with my two platform bed frame designs, I can store all my bed linen, my blankets, my towels and my out of season clothing. This is by far the most effective way to keep a clean and stylised look to my home.

Double Bed

Improve The Look Of Your Double Bed With A Headboard

When I decorated and furnished my spare bed room I had a rather limited budget, and since I cannot bear uncomfortable beds, I went for comfort in my choice of bed rather than style. This worked fine, but it did sort of niggle me not having a headboard for the double bed. If you have a single bed, then it is often placed against two walls, hence with cushions it doesn’t look like anything is missing. However, with a double bed, you have to put it in the middle (otherwise one person will find it much harder to get in and out of bed). I have tried, with minimal success to arrange cushions before guests arrive, but it still always looks like something is missing without a headboard. Hence, I went on a quest to find a headboard which would look great and work well with the bed which I already had.

Since I have kids I am always aware of the fact that they may wake our guests up, and since I don’t necessarily want to force guests out of bed, I wanted something which was really comfortable to lead against to read. This automatically ruled out the range of wooden headboards.

I then looked at some of the fabric options, but I had one major concern – keeping them clean. This issue is two fold, either you a treated fabric, which is easy to clean, or you have to clean it. Either way it probably requires some level of chemical which may or may not stay on the fabric and people may or may not be breathing in when they sleep. So I then looked at the leather option – very expensive, but otherwise ideal; wipe clean, comfortable to lean against and looks good.

A quick reality check reminded me that I simply could not afford this – so I looked at the faux leather options. I had never actually bought anything ‘faux leather’ before – so I was a bit concerned about what it would look and feel like. Since I do most of my furniture shopping on line, I decided to wander round a few shops in my lunch hour and see exactly what the different qualities of faux leather were like. I was actually very impressed. There were some which were definitely thinner than others, but I was fairly sure that on a well made bed head with the right padding this could work.

So back to the internet and I read more reviews than you can imagine! After making my decision was pleased to receive my double bed headboard in just 2 days; and quickly my room was transformed.

This is the perfect way to create an amazing double bed; in fact I am so impressed, that I would always now consider buying my double bed frames and headboards separately as it gives you maximum choice on the look and allows you to manage your budget.

Comfortable Double Bed

A Comfortable And Affordable Double Bed

Most of us spend quite a bit of time choosing our bed, and then after a while it often doesn’t seem as comfortable as we had hoped. So how do you get a bed which you will be pleased with for a long time?

The best way, without doubt is to go for a bed which is recommended. Hence I am writing a review about one which I got and love. Below are my reasons why this was such a good buy.

Assembly
There is no avoiding assembling furniture these days – just about anything you buy now is going to need some degree of putting together. This bed came with very clear instructions, I am not big into DIY and I had no problems. I also had all the bits I needed. Before buying a bed, I always read the reviews to see if people complain that bits were missing. I will never buy anything which has a review which suggests that no care and attention was taken at the factory. This was well packages, there was no damage to any of the parts and it included everything I needed to assemble it – the bed passed this section with flying colors.

Comfort
I used to have a box sprung base, but after staying overnight at a friends place I was converted to the idea of a platform bed as I had the most amazing nights sleep. (My friend did warn me that I needed to invest in a good mattress if I was going to swap to a platform bed – I did follow this advise check out my mattress reviews here). I am very pleased with sleeping on a platform bed and I can’t imagine ever changing back again.

Storage
Unfortunately I don’t live in a mansion, and I don’t have unlimited space, so I am always looking for storage solutions. I did consider one of the lower platform beds, but it seemed ridiculus to not make the most of the area under the bed with drawers, and I have not been disappointed. The drawers on this bed are on proper metal runners, so they are easy to pull in and out and deep enough for bulky winter clothes which can often seem to take up half your wardrobe. Since there are drawers on both sides of the bed, I use one set for clothes and the other for linen – perfect.

Look
I was a little worried about the wood used in this. It is made from composite wood and covered with a laminate – which I thought may look a little cheap – but actually it looks great; really stylish and much better than I had imagined from looking at the product online.

If you are looking for a really comfortable futon mattress, then I have the answer for you. I have been sleeping on futons since my student days when there were the only affordable beds. As a result I have owned and slept on some fairly horrific mattresses. I remember one of my early buys, which was uncomfortable by the end of the first night!

I am a big believer in natural. I don’t like the idea of sleeping on a mattress made out of synthetic materials. I know that these are very advances, but when you sleep you think that this is the best chance that our bodes get to truly rest and recuperate you realise quite how important your bed and mattress are.

One of the things which does really bother me about modern mattresses is the flame retardant which is put on them. I fully understand that this is essential for reducing house fires, but at the same time I personally don’t want to sleep on a mattress steeped in chemicals.

So here are the details of my perfect mattress. It has a natural rubber interior, may sound odd at first, but it is there to create support around which the padding is attached. The next layers are wool. This creates the primary padding. Finally there is quilted cotton covered with a damask cotton outer layer. Thankfully, futon mattresses have advanced. The first time I was in a shop to buy a futon mattress there was a choice of three different thicknesses and the assistant told me that thicker the mattress the more comfortable it would be and the longer it would last. That was it, the choice was simply a matter of money and thickness. What I failed to understand was that the thinnest of these would barely see you through one night, let alone last a year.

Buying a futon mattress now is an absolute pleasure. The range available is huge, so whether you want a sprung mattress, memory foam mattress or a more traditional futon mattress you can find what you want; and you can also expect it to be comfortable.

Initially I was drawn to a sprung mattress for my futon – I had the idea that since the design was so popular it must be OK. Then I realised that going for this is what my mother would have done – picked the tried and tested. So I decided to look around a bit more before parting with any money.

I had great fun checking out the memory foam mattresses. I think that a lot of the sale assistants get rather peeved with people trying these out, but I had the dimensions of my futon and was clearly ready to buy, so I got treated with a lot of respect. I did however, discover that not one of the sale assistants I spoke to actually had a memory foam mattress – this started to put me off a little. Then the killer question: “ do you have one of these?” Not only did she have one for herself, she had bought one for her daughter and son in law as a wedding present. Now she had my attention. It seemed to me that a mattresses must be pretty amazing if you bought it as a wedding present!
